Romantic Comedy Themes : Love Triangles

Vicky is in love with the guy from Barcelona, but "the guy from Barcelona"  is in love with Christina or as woody allen portrayed it he has some serious issues, resulting in wacky hijinks. Alternatively, vicky and christina are both in love with the guy from Barcelona, who is torn between the two and must make a choice.

What are the solutions?. In scenario 1 usually Vicky will turn out to be jealous (phantom of the opera), age inappropriate(the graduate),or worse a vampire, making it ok for the main guy/girl to ditch him/her.The second scenario is a little tougher but there is always the "lets have a threesome and call it a day" strategy of kevin smith (chasing amy) and woody allen(Vicky Cristina Barcelona). For weaker hearts the endings prescribed are running away from both (rules of attraction) or baiting one into friendship zone(spiderman). There is always the opportunity for the director  to tie one of them into a large bomb and have a go at a weird but truly happy ending.Any way here is my list.
  •     Vicky Cristina Barcelona (Juan Antonio/Cristina/Maria Elena)
The feisty, impetuous and possibly insane María Elena descends into the middle of her ex-husband Juan Antonio’s domestic bliss with  tourist Cristina, and systematically tears them apart by simply being her manically creative self. The attraction between the ex-lovers becomes all too clear to Cristina, and discovers that she can’t resist María Elena’s primal magnetism either

  •   The Graduate (Ben/Mrs. Robinson/Elaine)

Recent college graduate Benjamin Braddock is trapped into an affair with Mrs. Robinson, who happens to be the wife of his father's business partner and then finds himself falling in love with her teenage daughter, Elaine.Mrs Robinson, possibly modern cinema’s first MILF is the insignificant other here.

  •     Phantom of the Opera (Christine/The Phantom/Raoul)
A young chorus girl Christine - captures the attention and the heart of The Phantom With the Phantoms help, Christine becomes the venue's leading lady, but tragedy awaits as the young soprano has fallen for the charms of handsome noble Viscount Raoul De Chagny, The singing ,elaborate sets and amazing performances Gerard Butler      and Emmy Rossum make this movie special.

  • My Best Friend's Wedding (Jules/Michael/Kim)
Jules, by a promise made years earlier, is supposed to marry her best friend in three weeks, even though she doesn't want to. When she finds out that he's marrying someone else, she becomes jealous and tries to break off the wedding. This  is one of the movies in which the third character is sufficiently developed and we can actually sympathize with her.

  •  New Moon, Eclipse (Bella/Jacob/Edward)
The age-old vampires versus werewolves war gets a touch dramatic and doom-laden in this dark romance. Bella Swan has sworn her heart to vampire Edward Cullen, but to do this will mean sacrificing her life. Jacob, who accepts his destiny as a werewolf, offers Bella an alternative destiny.

  •   The Dark Knight (Rachel/Bruce/Harvey)
Bruce Wayne  and Rachel Dawes  were childhood friends and there’d always been a deep mutual attraction between them. It wasn’t until Rachel fell in love with hotshot Gotham City district attorney Harvey Dent (played by Aaron Eckhart) that Bruce came to realise just how much Rachel meant to him — though it came too late . . .

then again there is

  •     Titanic (Rose/Jack/Cal)
  •     Pretty in Pink (Andie/Ducky/Blaine)
  •     Casablanca (Rick/Ilsa/Victor)
  •     Sabrina (Sabrina/Linus/David)Pearl Harbor (Evelyn/Rafe/Danny)
  •     Bend It Like Beckham (Jess/Joe/Jules)
  •     Pirates of the Caribbean (Elizabeth/Jack/Will)
  •     Lord of the Rings (Aragorn/Eowyn/Arwen)
  •     The Notebook (Allie/Lon/Noah)Four Weddings and a Funeral (Charles/Fiona/Carrie)
  •     Eternal Sunshine (Stan/Mary/Dr. Mierzwiak)
  •     Rushmore (Max/Herman/Miss Cross)
  •     Spider-Man (Peter/Mary Jane/Harry)
  •     The English Patient (Katherine/Almasy/Geoffrey)
  •     Gone with the Wind (Scarlett/Ashley/Rhett)
  •     Wedding Crashers (Claire/John/Sack)
  •     Bridget Jones' Diary (Bridget/Mark/Daniel)
  •     Harry Potter (Ron/Hermione/Lavendar)
  •     Sweet Home Alabama (Melanie/Jake/Andrew)The Illusionist (Sophie/Leopold/Eisenheim)
  •     Breakfast at Tiffany's (Holly/Paul/Doc)
  •     Adventureland (James/Em/Lisa P.)
  •     Mean Girls (Cady/Aaron/Regina)
  •     The Rules of Attraction (Lauren/Paul/Sean)
  •      Moulin Rouge (Satine/Christian/The Duke)
  •     Pride and Prejudice (Elizabeth/Mr. Darcy/Mr. Wickham)

Then there is the whole new concept of two people love triangles aka love my alter ego theme. watch superman/spiderman for better understanding of this genre
